Manukau City Council, the Department of Internal Affairs, the Housing Corporation and Anglican Methodist Social Services agree on a joint two-year project to build four further community houses in Manukau City. Community houses are planned for Wiri (see 28 September 1980), Randwick Park (November 1981) and Tamworth Close, Manurewa (October 1982).

Otara East Intermediate School, Othello Drive, Otara, opens. Its official opening ceremony as Clover Park Intermediate School is held on 11 April 1981. In 1995 Clover Park school becomes New Zealand's first 'Middle School'.

Riverside Marina Ltd applies to Manukau City Council for planning consent to establish a 690-berth marina at the mouth of the Wairoa River near Clevedon (see also May 1997).

Aronui Kokiri school, a Maori arts and crafts school and cultural resource centre, opens on a trial basis in Lovegrove Crescent, Otara. The official opening ceremony is held in August.

Mangere Bridge's oldest commercial building, a shop on the corner of Coronation and Rimu Roads, Mangere, is demolished to make way for home units. The building had housed the village's only grocery store from the 1910s to the mid-1950s, then served successively as a plant shop, florist shop, real estate agency, and art and craft shop.

The Auckland Regional Authority opens a landfill at Greenmount, Harris Road, East Tamaki, replacing the Pikes Point landfill. It is proposed in the long term to form a park on the site (see also 5 June 1992).

Manukau City Council publishes 'Historic Buildings in Manukau City', an illustrated survey of heritage buildings in the city.

The Minister of Internal Affairs formally opens Howick Colonial Village, a heritage village situated in Manukau City Council's newly developed Lloyd Elsmore Park (see also 29 March 1981). In 1990 the name of the village is changed to Howick Historical Village.

The Mangere Boystown Police and Citizens Club, Buckland Road, Mangere, is officially opened by the Prime Minister, R.D. Muldoon.

Manukau councillor Colin Bidois in a speech given at the opening of the Mangere Boystown adresses the problem of graffiti in the city. Over the previous year, he notes, Manukau City Council has spent more than $17,000 on eradicating graffiti (see also October 1984).

Members of the National caucus housing committee visit Otara to inspect both existing housing units and new developments in the area. About this time, the Housing Corporation begins renovation of its multiple flat units in Otara at a cost of up to $10,000 per unit.

The Keri Downs Playcentre moves into its new buildings next to Red Hill Primary School, Papakura. The playcentre had been formed in 1969 but had so far used temporary accommodation, since 1971 sharing a scout hall. The official opening ceremony is held on 23 August 1980.

Manukau City Council formally hands over control of the McNicol homestead in Clevedon to the Clevedon Historical Society. The homestead, dating from 1878 and formerly known as 'Glenalbyn', has been donated to the council by Mr Bernie Ross, a former Manukau City Councillor. On 1 November 1980 the society opens a museum in the homestead.

The last connection is made in the new overhead 220 kV transmission line between Huntly and Auckland. This is South Auckland's fifth row of power pylons (see also 8 November 2004).
